About building in the mountains
The people of Vals take great pride in their unique cultural identity and traditions.
As a result, their buildings have a distinct character, specifically adapted to the local conditions, challenging terrain, and climate. The scattered settlement with small barns throughout the landscape is typical of a Walser village. Just like the old wooden houses, every building—whether old or new—features a solid stone roof.
The locals’ awareness of the uniqueness of their village is reflected in its modern development.
We have always dared to forge our own path. While we are open to change and innovation, preserving the integrity of our village’s character is important to us. In 2012, Vals was awarded the European Village Renewal Prize.
Building in this remote valley has always been a challenge in relation to nature.
The construction of the dam in the 1950s was a major environmental change. Over half a million cubic meters of concrete were used, and the reservoir flooded the area where the village of Zervreila once stood. This bold project played a key role in the village’s economic growth.
In the 1960s, German investor Karl Kurt Vorlop built the first high-rise buildings in the canton of Graubünden. These buildings still stand at the entrance to the village, making a strong impression. During this time, tourism in Vals grew significantly.
In 1994, the famous Swiss architect Peter Zumthor was chosen to design a new thermal bath. His spa is now seen as one of Switzerland’s most important contemporary architectural works, putting the small mountain village of Vals on the map. Two years after it was finished, the building was protected as a heritage site.
Today, Vals continues to be shaped by remarkable architecture. In recent years, well-known Swiss and international architects have realized new projects here.
