Hiking Week in Vals

Guided full-day and half-day hikes with mountain guide Katharina Vanz in a breathtaking landscape. Surrounded by high peaks, rugged gorges, and charming alpine meadows! You’ll also discover many old Walser settlements nestled along the slopes. While hiking, you are fully immersed in nature, noticing even the small things, taking joy in them — and carrying that feeling back into everyday life.

Vals – a Jewel in Untouched Nature!

Vals – a charming mountain village full of history and character. German-speaking since the 14th century, it now combines tradition with modern architecture such as Peter Zumthor’s famous thermal baths, the Dachberg ski area, and an extensive network of hiking trails. Nature, relaxation, and authentic mountain life – in Vals, you’ll experience Switzerland’s Grisons region at its finest.

Saturday, July 11

Old Zerfreila Trail, T2
7.4 km | ↑700 m | ↓100 m | approx. 3 hours

From the village, a shaded trail with a gentle ascent. We follow the old mule track to the Zerfreila dam, stop for a refreshment at the restaurant, and return to the village by bus.

Meeting point: 1:30 p.m., Post bus stop
Return: 4:44 p.m. or 5:44 p.m.

Sunday, July 12

Three Lakes Hike, T3
13 km | ↑960 m | ↓780 m | approx. 5½ hours

One of the most beautiful hikes in the canton of Grisons! We take the hiking bus to Alp Peil, then ascend steeply to Selvasee with its magnificent panoramic views, continuing to Ampervreilsee and Guraletschsee. Swimming may be possible! The descent continues to Zerfreilasee, followed by the bus back to Vals.

Departure: 8:30 a.m., Post bus stop
Return to Vals: 4:44 p.m.

Monday, July 13

Over the Tomül Pass to the Safien Valley, T3
11 km | ↑560 m | ↓730 m | approx. 4 hours

We take the hiking bus to Riefawald. The route begins gently across the natural Riedboden to Alp Tomül, then becomes steeper as we ascend to the Tomül Pass and descend into the neighboring Safien Valley to Turrahus. Exceptional views are guaranteed!

Departure: 9:30 a.m., Post bus stop
Return to Vals: 6:11 p.m.

Tuesday, July 14

Lunschania–Mont–Ronggtobel, T2
8 km | ↑↓630 m | approx. 3 hours

We take the bus to Lunschania, a short distance toward Ilanz. From there, the trail winds up through steep forest to Mont, a small settlement on a sunny terrace. We then cross a small valley and ascend to the second terrace at Traversasch, before descending directly back to Lunschania.

Return to Vals: 2:16 p.m.

Wednesday, July 15

Hike to Peilalp, T2
10 km | ↑↓610 m | approx. 3½ hours

We walk along the historic Valserweg to Alp Peil, the famous goat alpine pasture, where over 200 animals are grazed. A guided tour of the cheese dairy is available on request. Lunch can be a picnic or at the kiosk. Return on the opposite side of the valley, mostly through the forest, back to Vals.

Thursday, July 16

Faltschonhorn 3,022 m, T3
12.5 km | ↑1,000 m | ↓1,280 m | approx. 5½ hours

We take the hiking bus to Leisalp and then walk up to Fuorcla da Patnaul, continuing south over partly slippery paths to the summit of Faltschonhorn. Surefootedness is required. Return via Leisalp to Gadastatt, then down to Vals by cable car.

Return: approx. 4:00 p.m.

Friday, July 17

Hängelahütte, T2
7 km | ↑710 m | ↓150 m | approx. 3 hours

We’ll enjoy a relaxed walk through the forest toward Leisalp, but turn left beforehand to visit the Hängelahütte. Afterwards, we continue along the beautiful trail to Gadastatt and take the cable car back down to the valley.

Return: approx. 3:00 p.m.

Additional activities:

5:00 p.m.: Public aperitif at the village square, Visit Vals
7:00 p.m.: Choir concert in the church

Saturday, July 18

Panorama Trail Gadastatt–Zerfreila, T2
5.5 km | ↑220 m | ↓200 m | approx. 2 hours

The famous panorama trail as the highlight of the week, featuring a wealth of vibrant flowers and an exciting moorland educational path. We take the cable car up to Gadastatt and the bus from Zerfreila back to Vals.

Meeting point: 9:30 a.m., valley station of the cable car
Return: approx. 1:30 p.m.

Hiking Grade & Insurance

T1: Trails are well built and secured; the risk of falling is largely excluded.
T2: Terrain may be partly steep; some surefootedness and good hiking shoes are recommended.
T3: Challenging mountain hiking; exposed sections with a risk of falling are possible. Surefootedness and good hiking shoes are essential.
